An innovative new primary school on a deprived estate has claimed an architecture award and given a sense of pride to pupils and the community. But can great buildings cure social ills?

Stepping inside the school, there is an immediate feeling of spaciousness and artistic input. The welcome from the pupils is as warm as the blues and purples which decorate the buildings and playground. There are wide smiles and waves from the children, who mostly come from the neighbouring Tulse Hill estate.
